Maui championship: Marquette’s basketball team had a really exciting game in the Maui championship. Fans were ecstatic during their hard-fought matchup versus Purdue. Marquette, led by their star player Oso Ighodaro, wanted to make history by beating the number one and number two teams in the Associated Press poll on two days in a row. But even though they tried really hard against Purdue, they lost with a score of 78-75, which made everyone feel sad.
Ighodaro’s Tough Job
Ighodaro had a big job trying to stop Purdue’s tall 7-foot-4 player, Zach Edey. But he got into some trouble early in the game with fouls, so they had to switch in Ben Gold. This helped Purdue take the lead 15-12 because Ighodaro couldn’t play.
Purdue’s Amazing Shot
As the first half ended, Purdue’s Lance Jones made an incredible 85-foot shot, making their lead even bigger at 45-33. Edey did really well in the first 20 minutes, scoring 13 points and getting six rebounds, showing everyone Purdue meant business.
Marquette Keeps Trying
Even though Marquette was losing 61-50, they didn’t give up. The game became closer thanks to some excellent three-point shooting from Stevie Mitchell and a quick slam by Gold. Ighodaro made a good shot, and they got really close at 76-75, but Purdue won with another important shot by Edey.
Edey’s Great Game
Zach Edey was the star for Purdue, scoring 28 points and getting 15 rebounds. Marquette’s Tyler Kolek did great too, scoring 22 points and playing well in offense.

Marquette has been to the Maui tournament four times, and this was their eighth win out of eleven games. Even though they got to the championship in 2007, they lost to Duke 77-73.
Even though Marquette didn’t win the Maui championship this time, their hard work and history make their basketball journey special. Fans will remember the exciting games and good plays, and Marquette is still a strong team in college basketball.
